Robyn's E News 22 Dec 08

Hi All,

Noticed lots of people out training over the weekend. I think everyone must check out the BOM website and schedule rides accordingly. Still some "dodge the showers" happening if your ride was anything like mine. It was nice to see the sun again, albeit way too briefly as it looks like we are about to cloud over again.

4. On the mend after knee surgery - Al Stancombe.

5. Channel 9 will be screening a one hour highlights package from Ironman WA at 11am, Sunday 25 January 09.

6. Get well wishes to Ali Fitch. Ali has been admitted to Canberra Hospital with pneumonia.

7. Bicycle NT says this is a good time to remind people to report broken glass, and all other problems they find on their road/path. You can either call your local council directly or go to Report a fault on the network.

8. Some people have reported that the Challenge Series website is only showing the Adelaide event. When you go to www.challengeseries.org.au you currently need to hover on each of the people featured to bring up the other events pages. This may be rectified over Christmas. In the meantime the information for all the remaining Challenge Series events are there - so get cracking with your bookings over the break.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas where ever you are spending it (members are currently all around the world as well as spread across Australia). Thanks for your feedback on E News, hope you enjoyed the eclectic mix of news during the year.

Hi All,

Those members still out there training are finding it increasingly more difficult to dodge the raindrops. With a cyclone expected to form in the vicinity by end of week, I'm thinking it's not going to get any easier. The water temperature at Nightcliff Pool is down to ... wait for it ... a refreshing 30 degrees!

UNIFORM UPDATE:

1. We haven't forgotten those bathers that were returned. Scody have advised that replacements have been dispatched and fingers crossed we may still have everyone sorted by Christmas. Thank you for your patience.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. CLUB TOWELS: Last few, grab yours now for Christmas stocking fillers $25 Contact darwintriclub@bigpond.com

2. FOR SALE: Darwin Triathlon Club Ladies TriSuit XS $155 Contact darwintriclub@bigpond.com

4. ITEMS for this section by 8pm Sunday please.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Many of you will remember Tom Gilfedder. Tom is back in town for a short visit enroute to Alice Springs for Christmas. Good to catch up. Brett Sampson was also in town recently.

2. We have a number of people departing Darwin for far flung places. One farewell this week is Nic Hahn. Good luck Nic.

3. I got a couple of emails pointing out that the bike course at the Canberra Half Ironman was longer than the stated 90km. Take your pick ... anywhere between 93km & 96km. From all reports, those who competed in the event copped some pretty tough conditions.

4. Gu have a yummy flavour (choc & mint) ideal for silly season running.

5. Love the TA Challenge Series towel. Don't forget that the Challenge Series has it's own website www.challengeseries.org.au for info on all upcoming events.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Great news for the club - The junior committee has been successful in obtaining sponsorship for the purchase of safety equipment (2 way radios). What a great Christmas present ! Our thanks to the Telstra Shop Darwin City and Winnellie who annually support this program.

2. Coach Lee Wilson will be away for most of December so please note the following information about Friday's track sessions during that time: Friday 12 & 19 track will be on; Friday 26 – no track; Friday 2 January – back to normal

3. The following may be of interest to those looking to join a group ride: Bryan Swansburg, Secretary Darwin Cycle Club advises that after some discussion they are now planning to add a less intense “Saturday Morning Ride” . The original 6:00am ride starting at Nightcliff Pool tends to be a 95 km loop around Palmerston in 3 hours, about 32 km/h average. No changes here.

The additional ride will be a 45 km loop around the airport average about 25 km/h. Start at 06:15 at the Bayview traffic lights (Tiger Brennan at Stoddart, south corner) , 06:30 at Cullen Bay Roundabout (old hospital site); 07:00 at Nightcliff Pool, then Rapid Creek Bridge, CDU to Dripstone Road To Vanderlin then Kalymnos, Amy Johnson to intercept the long ride on Tiger Brennan to meet at Roma Café around 08:45.

They will see if these times work for everyone – the goal here is to get people out who are not up to a 3 hour fast pack ride – if you are uncomfortable in a peloton this will be the place to gain some skills, meet other cyclists your speed and still meet up with others from the ride at the Roma Café. They will try to have DCC committee members at least at Nightcliff until this becomes self-sustaining.

4. Darrell Nash is the Junior Coordinator for the Port Macquarie Triathlon Club. He has been given an entry into the Australian Ironman in Port Macquarie to be raffled off in order to raise money for the family of a local 5 year old girl, Alani Cockshutt who is currently undergoing treatment for Leukaemia. Alani's Mum Mel competed in the 2008 Australian Ironman and came 3rd female overall (as an age grouper) beating all but 2 of the pros and then competed in Hawaii. When they returned to Australia it was then that Alani was diagnosed. Alani and her family have been and continue staying at Ronald MacDonald House in Sydney, 400km away from their home.

Please visit the club forum at www.portmactriclub.com.au - go to General Chat and then to the Fundraiser section for ALL details on Alani and everything they have done so far. Your assistance would be appreciated.

5. Everything you need to know about cycling — Cycling Central online now at sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral.

6. Swim squad at Nightcliff Pool (6-7am Tues & Thurs) with Coach Daryl Stanley continues except on public holidays.

7. Looking for last minute gift ideas? Don't forget we have a few Darwin Triathlon Club towels still available. At $25 they are ideal. Contact darwintriclub@bigpond.com

OTHER NEWS:

1. Some great bargains in the For Sale / Wanted section today. Pete has a house that requires renovations... say no more.

2. Pete tells us that the Spirit kayak is as used in the Katherine Ultra Challenge by reigning two time champ Ian Norton. And the downriver racer was previously used by legends Daryl Stanley and Emma Winterflood for KUC. They won't last so if you are interested get in fast.

3. Organisers are currently firming dates for both KUC and City2Surf.

4. Last Sunday, Texan Michael Hennessey broke the Guinness World Record for most Ironman triathlons in a calendar year. Ford Ironman Arizona, where he clocked a respectable 12.42, was Michael’s 15th Ironman finish since March 2008. With the goal of raising awareness for the chromosomal disorders trisomy 13 and 18, Michael averaged two Ironman races per month, racing on two consecutive weekends in both April and August, and THREE consecutive weekends in July. His slowest time was 14:28 (Oklahoma City), and he managed a PB of 10.48 in Austria. In addition to raising awareness, Michael’s charity ‘Ironman for Kids’ is now purchasing specially designed trikes and bikes for trisomy kids. Regardless of whether you share his spiritual motivation, it’s hard to deny this is a massive (albeit crazy) accomplishment. To check out Michael’s times go to: http://ironmanforkids.com/sponsorship.
5. Amanda Donohoe, Craig Garland, Anthony Beven, Monica Stewart & Mick Outhred will be among members competing in the first of the new Triathlon Australia Challenge Series events when they head down to Adelaide this weekend. Good luck to all!

6. Entries close Friday for the Canberra Half Ironman (14 Dec). The event website www.canberrahalf.com has lots of info on travel and accommodation if you are interested.

7. Wow, I just checked the Flickr hits. Now rapidly approaching 13,800 !

8. Bicycling NT is looking out for us. Annie (Chair Bicycling NT) recently requested a meeting with the Dept of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) to see how they were accommodating cyclists' needs as part of the major works taking place at Wishart Rd and (other) intersection near Kormilda College. The juniors are now looking forward to the Christmas Aquathlon with the Seniors on 6th Dec at Nightcliff pool at 6pm. Always a highlight on our calendar.

2. Ali Fitch was forced to withdraw on the run in IM Arizona this morning. Ali had come through the field into 3rd on the run before an injury sustained late on the bike took its toll.

3. The women's leaderboard at IM Arizona was a constantly changing affair. Gotta love those live race updates for excitment.

4. Keiran Doe did most of the run at IM AZ in his socks.

5. The pace was up at the duathlon yesterday and a few of the guys were redlining. One even forgot to dismount at the line. A couple of others came out of the roundabout like they had another lap to go & almost locked up at the dismount line. One lost some time with a wrong turn on the final run. But boys being boys they sure looked like they were having fun while they smashed themselves. Good to watch unfold.

6. The Evolution Stair Run filled up fast and closed quickly. Competitors will make the climb this weekend & they include a number of our members.

7. Christmas drinks were enjoyed on Friday. The diehards were last seen heading for Throb. Any news after that ???

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... a new race location announcement raises your interest level
... you are happy the duathlon series is done and won

OTHER NEWS:

1. Some Clearwater residents are up in arms after 70.3 Worlds last weekend. Poor Race Directors have a lot to cope with to bring us our favourite events.

6. Mick Outhred had to wait for a funeral to pass in the middle of his ride in the Lombok International Triathlon. It's billed as the toughest triathlon in Asia and appears it lives up to its name. Many of the dns' on the results list took one look at the bike course and opted out.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you avoid puddles because you don't want to get your bike dirty.
... you are very happy to sit around in training gear
... you are disappointed that airfares to your favourite event destinations always seem to go up just as you decide to book.

Robyn's E News 10 Nov 08

Hi All,

Hidden Valley saw action of a different kind yesterday. Instead of V8s there were duathletes tearing up the straight! We had a good turnout for the first of the duathlons and as usual, those with a running bent came out of the woodwork. Great to see them back. Thanks to Tim Ellison for taking over at late notice as RD. There was positive feedback on the course. Tim was assisted by some great volunteers and we extend our thanks to all.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Please cast your vote at www.performerawards.com.au in The Age Sports Awards. There are various categories including the Performer of the Year, there are five other award categories – for team, coach, international, disabled and young performer of the year. It's a very easy process, the hardest part will be deciding whether you will vote for Ironman winner Craig Alexander or for Emma Snowsill for her Olympic performance. Both are finalists. Voting closes soon so please do it today.

2. We wish Kim Stevens a speedy recovery from illness. Kim is in hospital battling complications from a severe viral infection.

3. Lee Wilson recently travelled to Bendigo to complete a Level 2 athletics coaching course.

4. Paul Bell is now a TA recognised practising Level 1 Triathlon Coach.

5. The partner of a colleague of a member was found unconscious when out for a run with the dog. The only way he could be identified and his partner contacted was the phone number on the dog's tag!!! The gentleman in question spent some time in hospital and is OK now. This story is a good reminder of the need for all of us to carry ID when out training.

6. A Perth based cycling group is conducting a fundraising effort with some big prizes. Interested? See www.rideforyouth.com.au

7. Penny Nolton volunteered on the Triathlon Pink event (breast cancer charity event) down south and was completely exhausted by the end of the day – 4 races, all women. She says many very emotional! She felt like she knew what she was doing (must be that good start she got to fantastically well run races here in Darwin).
8. Michael Hennessy equalled the world record of 14 Ironman races in a calendar year with his finish in Florida. He has one more to go to break it and is doing two more after that. He dnf’d in Malaysia, boycotted China & isn’t counting Arizona from late last year, so think he’s going to end up with 17 instead of 18 as planned. Not a bad effort though and he’s no slouch either. Think his PB so far is 10:48! Michael is raising funds for charity and his entry for Port Mac this year was sponsored by club members Kylie & Paul Sheffield.

Safe training,
Cheers

Please note that the last date for returns is Wednesday 5 Nov 08. Please ensure you have returned items to myself, Jodie McLeod or Jane Marie Kerslake TODAY. No returns will be accepted after today.

2. This applies only to those items mentioned.

3. The new uniforms look great. The colours stand out and will be easy to spot at races. Nice budgie colours.

4. Let us know if you spot a DTC uniform (new or old) at an away race. If you can get a photo even better.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. Items for this section by 8pm Sunday please.

OTHER NEWS:

1. You may wonder why we get a bit anal sometimes about rules of triathlon & reminding you all to stop at red lights & obey traffic rules. This from Legal Radar blog dated 2 Nov 08: " In the beginning of this year, a Montgomery County Jury awarded $350,000 to a woman involved in a crash that killed a bicyclist during a Blacksburg triathlon in the year 2000. Sharon Knight, a resident of the town had filed a lawsuit against the town and the director of the third annual Greater Blacksburg Triathlon, alleging that they had failed to warn passing vehicles that they were entering a race area. Gary Wayne Taylor, a participant of the race, crashed into Knight after passing through a red light. Knight tried to swerve away but couldn’t avoid a collision. She had initially asked for $750,000 in damages for emotional trauma and damage to her car. A jury awarded $500,000 in damages to Taylor's family in a 2002 verdict after finding that the town and Biancur were negligent in organizing the race.
The town, which sponsored the event, stated that they had asked all participants to follow traffic rules and signs before the competition began.
Beverly Biancur, the director of the race is no longer an employee of the town."

2. Hawaii Ironman champion Craig Alexander was at the Noosa triathlon last weekend. He joined retired triathletes Craig Walton and Miles Stewart in a relay team that won a celebrity race.

3. From IM Florida reports of a new low for triathlon cheats, apparently there was a guy heading into the swim acting strangely, as in keeping his hand in the water as he walked. When a wave rolled by it revealed he was trying to conceal the fins he was carrying. There is a photo around I believe. The good part is a swim marshall also noticed. The guy was allowed to start the race without them but lets hope there is some follow up. Imagine getting whacked in the face by a set of fins!

4. If you wish to do the Steps of Evolution race the Darwin Surf Club is conducting (entry form was attached to Monday's E News) I suggest you get your form & entry fee to Julie Gallagher asap. Numbers are limited and interest is high - 33 stories high.

5. The first of the duathlons happens at Hidden Valley raceway on Sunday morning. We expect to see some fast and furious racing especially from those runners who aren't normally that keen on getting wet in the swim/bike/run format.

6. Good to see the pot hole at the entrance to the Lee Point carpark has been filled in while I was away. Now if we could only get Lake Bennett to do the same to the one on their roundabout....

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

...you are researching the merits of racing in compression socks
...you have lost yet another toe nail
...your shoes have more kilometres on them than your car does

See you all at Hidden Valley raceway

OTHER NEWS:

1. Participants gain entry into the Ford Ironman World Championship one of three ways: by qualifying for a slot at one of more than twenty events held worldwide, by winning a slot through Ironman’s charitable eBay Auction or by being selected in the Ironman Lottery. Recognized as one of the most in-demand athletic events in the world, nearly 60,000 athletes vie for one of 1,800 coveted slots to the Ford Ironman World Championship, taking place in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, each year.

2. The 2009 Ironman Lottery Program officially opened on Wednesday, October 1 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Athletes interested in earning a slot through the Ironman Lottery must apply by Saturday, February 28, 2009 with all winning entries being announced on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. A vision of Ironman founder, John Collins, the Ironman Lottery began in 1983 as a way to provide athletes of all abilities the opportunity to qualify for the world’s most challenging endurance event. The Ironman Lottery awards 150 domestic (USA), 50 international and 5 physically challenged slots that are chosen randomly from more than 7,000 lottery entries. More info: www.ironman.com/faq/lotteryfaq

3. Club Champion Jerome Bosmans will be on hand at the junior event on Sunday to assist with distribution of packs to the kids. Jerome made a donation from his NT Sports Award prize to assist with the purchasing of some great gear for the juniors. A grant from Woolworths has also helped. Congratulations to the junior committee on the flying start to the season. The program continues to improve and registration day attracted around 60 youngsters, many of whom were returning for another season. We encourage you all to call in on Sunday and assist with the junior event. If you are out training, also swing past .. the kids love to see all the "flash" grown up tri toys.

4. The XTERRA course at Maui, Hawaii is a classic point-to-point race covering 27-miles of unyielding terrain. Conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage to repeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Participants are not permitted to pre-ride the course so for newcomers, it's read and react. The bike course is full of rockstrewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, short steep and long go-forever climbs, hard packed lava and deep, dusty silt. There's more than 2,500 total feet of climbing and one can never predict how hot it might be on race day. The reputation is brutal and very well deserved. Hawaii's natural obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and out on the run more than a dozen different surfaces and Maui's most stunning oceanfront scenery awaits competitors. More info: www.xterraplanet.com

5. Score: Chain rings 2 Athletes 0. Mark Anzin was the latest to be attacked by those pesky little chain rings & has had to get some treatment. Good excuse for a little bit of R & R.

Hi All,

The Kerran Mudgway Memorial Club Championships got underway in hot conditions at Lake Bennett. Luckily a pleasant breeze arrived in time to cool things down for back markers on the run. Race Director Ian Norton set a new bench mark ... Ian arranged for sponges soaked in ice water to be available & these were given a resounding thumbs up by competitors. Ian was supported by a crew of volunteers who worked many hours to have the best possible course marked out for the Club Champs. Thanks to Ian and helpers, your efforts were appreciated by all.

Robyn's E News 20 Oct 08

Hi All,

The juniors kicked off yesterday & from all reports it was a great morning - all the kids seemed to really enjoy themselves! ( & amazingly no stacks!!) It was organised very well by all the "big kids" involved in the event and it ran very smoothly! Thanks to all the enthusiastic volunteers who encouraged & supported the next generation of triathletes through their first event of their new season.

The Kerran Mudgway Memorial Club Championship takes place this weekend. The move to the earlier timeslot is courtesy of the revamped calendar. This is one of the highlight events of the year and usually makes for bragging rights for months to come. The short option is also popular so we are expecting a good turn out on Saturday afternoon.

Please read the event info so you are up to speed on what is taking place. There are also a couple of calls for assistance & also a request for old carpet to cover some rough patches in transition and mount areas.

Event Info:

I hope you are all ready for one of our most challenging, but fun races of the year.

Lake Bennett Resort is approx 90km from Darwin so please allow extra travelling time. Registration closes 4.15pm, not registered, no race. It is also too far to dash home for forgotten items, so check your gear before leaving (swim cap, goggles, helmet, cycle shoes, running shoes, etc).

The Resort has blocked out some accommodation for us. Contact number 8976 0960 (mention you want triathlon rate). Should you wish to eat at the restaurant on Saturday evening, table bookings are requested by Thursday morning on 8976 0960.

In the past people have commented on the taste of the water at Lake Bennett. If you think you may have a problem, consider bringing water with you to use.

It will be hot so don't forget the sunscreen. Flies are also sticky so add aeroguard to the list. And being that time of year, consider the possibility of rain as well.

Transition looks like being in the same place as last year. RD would like to cover some rough spots, so if anyone has any old carpet they can spare or loan, (especially runners or mats), please contact RD Ian Norton 0409 283 448. Competitors would be appreciative as there is a lot of rock and gravel, with fairly poor grass cover.

Some sections of the entrance area will need to be swept. If you can bring a heavy duty broom and help out with this task please let Ian know or "just do it".

Race start at 4.30pm, both short and long course will head off together this year, but swim will be one lap instead of two. (This is to allow for a safer bike course due to a changed turn around site). The lake is in good condition, still fairly cool, water level not bad.

Bike will be nearer to 30km than last year! With the turn around 1 km past transition. The road is better condition than normal, but still bumpy in places. Use zipps etc. at your own risk!

The run will be hot and hilly. Please make sure you are well hydrated throughout the day, and that you have prepared properly for a race this tough in build up conditions.

If you are able, we encourage you to stay on afterward. There will be the usual refreshments after the race, plus some beer courtesy of the triathlon club in appreciation of your making the trip down.

Afterward, you are all invited to BBQ afterward. Location directions from Mick Outhred or any of the committee after the race. Bring your food, drinks & chair along, BBQ available to use.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. FOR SALE: We are down to the last few Darwin Triathlon Club towels. $25 each.

2. Items for this section by 8pm tomorrow please.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Congratulations to our oldest female club member Aileen Kollasch who achieved her aim of competing in the Alice Springs Masters Games Triathlon (also her first triathlon). Great effort Aileen.

2. Rob Weatherald was overall winner of the Masters Games Triathlon. The duathlon results are somewhat difficult to follow but appears Rob also went well in that event. Well done Robbie.

3. Not long now until the Noosa Triathlon. Noosa entry sold out in record time this year.

4. Those members who competed in the NT Long Course Triathlon and the NT Sprint Distance Championships have earned points towards selection for the Australian age group team for 2009 ITU World Sprint Distance Championships (Gold Coast) and/or 2009 ITU World Long Distance Championships (Perth). Should you be interested in applying for a position on the team, please familiarise yourself with the relevant Selection Criteria (available online at www.triathlon.org.au or I'm happy to chat to you about the process).

5. Entry for Ironman Western Australia closes this week.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you swim, bike & run regardless of the weather
... you are ecstatic when you tick over your first 100km ride
... you have already hinted in the right places about a piece of go faster equipment you would like for Christmas

3. Keep a look out for PowerBar gel blasts, yummy & convenient.

5. The most amazing thing I saw in Hawaii was how totally focussed Craig Alexander looked in the lead up days and on race morning.

Robyn's E News 9 Oct 08

Hi All,

Good luck to all those competing in the Sprint event at the weekend.

NWXT EVENT:

Race 3 K9 Sprint Series (Incorp. NT Sprint Distance Championships)
Sunday 12 October 08
Lake Alexander, 7am start
Registration closes: 6.45am
750m swim/ 20km cycle / 5km run

Information Update:

Here is some more information on Sunday’s race from President John Thyne. Please pass this message onto as many people as possible.

Triathlon NT will be holding their AGM just before the race on Sunday. So registration will close at 6.45am and the AGM is planned to take about 10 minutes after that.

The race brief will then be held and the race will start as close to 7am as possible.

There is a slight change to the normal ride course which you should be aware of. The ride is the normal two laps out around the Sunset Cove round about at Nightcliff. The turn for the second lap will not be at the Lake - it has been moved back to outside the Cool Spot on Dick Ward Drive. This is so the ride course will be as close to 20km as is safely possible.

There will be a drafting official on a motor bike for this event.

Other information about the course will be given during the race brief.

Remember to get there nice and early to get registered on time.

The registration process will be slightly different to the normal club race registration. You will also need to supply your age at the 31 Dec 08. (Your TA card has your age group as at 31 Dec 08).

After the race winners trophies and age group medals will be given out. There will also be spot prizes given out which have been donated by K9 Cycles. You have to be there to win so please stay after the race for your chance to win.

If any one is not planning to race then please come down and give Mark Anzin a hand to be an official, help at the drink station or any other job that needs doing.

Train safe,
Cheers,
Robyn

OTHER NEWS:

1. Controversy at the ITU World Duathlon Champs in Rimini where first across the line was disqualified along with another competitor for "unsportsmanlike and dangerous behaviour on the first lap of the bike segment which risked the safety of the competitors around them". This gave 2nd across the line, Paul Amey his third title.

2. Lance Armstrong's intentions to compete in the Tour Down Under in January may not come to anything. The international ruling body, ICU, have said Armstrong would have to show that he has complied UCI's “biological passport” rule demanding that athletes must be registered with an anti-doping program for at least six months six months prior to competing.

3. Our members are competing far and wide over the next few weeks. Al Stancombe is off to do the Around the Bay in a Day ride on 19 October, Ali Fitch and Stu Fitch will line up at the Gold Coast Half Ironman next weekend and Louise Ogden, Shaye Hatty, Alison Croser, David Croser and Lee Wilson will be involved in the Melbourne Marathon and Half Marathon on 12 October.

4. Who was that leading athlete who turned early yesterday? He is up there with the best of them. I saw Courtney Atkinson do this once when he had a record 3rd or 4th title seemingly in the bag.

4. E News will now take a break. Any urgent updates will be posted direct to E News on the club website. E News archive can also be viewed there.

Hi All,

Woke to the sound of rain on the roof overnight. It has settled the dust - for a couple of hours anyway.

We are expecting a good turnout at Palmerston this weekend for Race 2 of the K9 Cycles Sprint Series. Hope to see you there too.

RESULTS:

1. Geoff Simpson Memorial Trophies for 2008:

OTHER NEWS:

1. One of our new members, Aileen Kollasch has set her sights on competing in the Alice Springs Masters Games. Aileen reports her training is coming along well. She won't be fast she says, but will have fun. Oh, and by the way Aileen is 74 years young and this will be her first triathlon.

2. More tri baby news. Stacey & Kris Bitz have baby number two on the way. Congratulations. There are also a couple of arrival's due any time .. Helen Clayton and Kate Bradbury are both due any day now.

3. Did you know the Flickr page (link below) now has close to 1200 photos up. The page has also just ticked over 10,400 views.

4. The weather in WA last weekend must have been bad: The organisers of an adventure race in Albany say cold temperatures and strong winds forced most teams to cut short the course. About 250 competitors took part in the inaugural Great Southern Adventure Race, which was staged over the weekend. Olympic rower Sally Newmarch and her team, including Western Australian Triathlete of the Year, Sean O'Neill, won the 200 kilometre race. Event spokesperson Naantali Marshall says all 50 teams finished the race, but only one team completed the course.

"Unfortunately when they got up very early on Sunday morning at 3:00am for the 4:00am race briefing, they were greeted by gale force winds, cold temperatures and some quite heavy rain. So that certainly didn't make conditions easy and the race as fun as it should have been."

5. And spare a thought for those in Alice Springs still cleaning up after the wild weather.

6. The junior committee is busy preparing for the opening event on the junior calendar. The juniors kick off on 19 October 08 at Lake Alexander. The juniors are supported this year by a grant from Woolworths and a generous donation from Jerome. So its time to get the kids bikes roadworthy and make sure the helmet fits.

7. Michellie Jones has withdrawn from the Oct. 11 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, after suffering a slight tear to her right calf in Cancun last Sunday. She was a dnf after recording the fastest bike split.

8. A new race in the States next year will introduce real time GPS athlete tracking which will be up on screens for spectators to view. Exciting development in the sport.

So far the only suggestion I have received is Lee Point. Give call John on 0423 797 401 with your suggestions.
