Robyn's E News 10 Nov 08

Hi All,

Hidden Valley saw action of a different kind yesterday. Instead of V8s there were duathletes tearing up the straight! We had a good turnout for the first of the duathlons and as usual, those with a running bent came out of the woodwork. Great to see them back. Thanks to Tim Ellison for taking over at late notice as RD. There was positive feedback on the course. Tim was assisted by some great volunteers and we extend our thanks to all.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Please cast your vote at www.performerawards.com.au in The Age Sports Awards. There are various categories including the Performer of the Year, there are five other award categories – for team, coach, international, disabled and young performer of the year. It's a very easy process, the hardest part will be deciding whether you will vote for Ironman winner Craig Alexander or for Emma Snowsill for her Olympic performance. Both are finalists. Voting closes soon so please do it today.

2. We wish Kim Stevens a speedy recovery from illness. Kim is in hospital battling complications from a severe viral infection.

3. Lee Wilson recently travelled to Bendigo to complete a Level 2 athletics coaching course.

4. Paul Bell is now a TA recognised practising Level 1 Triathlon Coach.

5. The partner of a colleague of a member was found unconscious when out for a run with the dog. The only way he could be identified and his partner contacted was the phone number on the dog's tag!!! The gentleman in question spent some time in hospital and is OK now. This story is a good reminder of the need for all of us to carry ID when out training.

6. A Perth based cycling group is conducting a fundraising effort with some big prizes. Interested? See www.rideforyouth.com.au

7. Penny Nolton volunteered on the Triathlon Pink event (breast cancer charity event) down south and was completely exhausted by the end of the day – 4 races, all women. She says many very emotional! She felt like she knew what she was doing (must be that good start she got to fantastically well run races here in Darwin).
8. Michael Hennessy equalled the world record of 14 Ironman races in a calendar year with his finish in Florida. He has one more to go to break it and is doing two more after that. He dnf’d in Malaysia, boycotted China & isn’t counting Arizona from late last year, so think he’s going to end up with 17 instead of 18 as planned. Not a bad effort though and he’s no slouch either. Think his PB so far is 10:48! Michael is raising funds for charity and his entry for Port Mac this year was sponsored by club members Kylie & Paul Sheffield.

Safe training,
Cheers
Robyn
