Robyn's E News - 4 Feb 09

Hi All,

ARAFURA GAMES NEWS:

1. Arafura is not far off now and arrangements for the race on 10 May are well underway. Triathlon NT Technical Delegate, Phil Blumberg, is putting together a team of Technical Officials for the race. If you are not intending to race but were planning to watch or help out in some way, then acting as a TO is the ideal way to get right amongst the action.
Being a TO is not an arduous task, it will help you sharpen up your knowledge of the rules and it will give you a different perspective on Triathlon. If you are interested in being involved as a TO please contact Phil on phil.blumberg@nt.gov.au or phone him at home on 89852758.

Triathlon Australia are sending a highly qualified Race Referee but the race can't proceed without a team of TOs so your support is important.

OTHER NEWS:

1. On Saturday 24 Jan 09, David Morris was tragically killed in a cycling accident on the outskirts of Sydney. David was the General Manager of Supercraft, Presenting Sponsor for Ironman Australia and Ironman Western Australia. He had recently competed at Ironman World Championships in Hawaii & IM WA. Our sympathy goes to David's family and friends.

2. Sorry folks, that post race celebratory beer is out, according to a recent study: "The results of our study show that moderate consumption of alcohol increases the level of injury related strength loss and therefore delays the recovery of dynamic and static strength following eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage. This indicates that recovery from any strenuous sporting pursuit which has an eccentric component will be delayed if moderate amounts of alcohol are consumed during the subsequent three hours". Confirms results of previous studies.

3. Ironman training session:- Lee Wilson has arranged the hire of Parap Pool on Saturday 7 February to conduct an Ironman training session for members heading to New Zealand. If any DTC members would like to attend please contact lee for further information. Start time will be 5:30 am, you can join in for some or all of the session. Lee.wilson@ausport.gov.au or 0437 700 422

4. Those who raced in Brisbane yesterday had squally conditions, a tough swim and a tight & technical bike course . The wave starts were spread over a considerable amount of time & some course changes happened mid race as well, so any time comparisons need to be done within the respective age group categories.

5. Congratulations to Monica Stewart (2nd F55-59) on her podium place in Brisbane. Added to her 4th in Adelaide last November, Monica looks to have her name pencilled on a Gold Coast Worlds berth for September.

6. Kathy McKay and Belinda Townend head for Victoria this week for their first half ironman when they compete at Ironman 70.3 Geelong. They will be toeing the line with experienced campaigners Scott Bevis and Stu Fitch. Good luck to all.

TRIATHLON TRIVIA:

Q: What is outside assistance?
A: Any attempt by an unauthorised or unofficial source to help or to stabilise a competitor
(Translation - you need to do it all by yourself; parent/partner/friend can't take your goggles & cap at the end of the swim or help you change a flat tyre on the bike leg or have a water bottle on the run course for you etc)

Safe training,
Cheers
Robyn
