Robyn's E News 18 Mar 09

Hi All,

Things are hotting up on the Arafura Games Triathlon front. I'll repeat the info from Monday again today as well as some extra info on marching in the Opening Ceremony (night before triathlon so take that into consideration).

Tri action is back at Lake Alexander again this weekend. Sunday will be an ideal time to brush away the cobwebs and get a feel for a "proper" triathlon again or even for the first time, for some of you. It's also a fantastic opportunity to kick start your Arafura Games campaign.

NEXT EVENT:

22 March 09
Super Sprint Race
Lake Alexander
7am (Registration for this one closes at 6.40am sharp.)
300m swim, 13km bike, 3km run

Roster:

Race Director: John Thyne 0423 797 401
Registration: Aaron Collins / Mark Anzin
Timekeepers: Amanda Donohoe / Mark Edmonds
Fruit / Ice: Ernie Koch

Notes:

1. As this is the first "real" triathlon for awhile please remember:

NO DRAFTING;
KEEP TO LEFT IN RIDE & RUN;
TORSO MUST BE COVERED RIDE & RUN;
NO iPODS (or similar) ALLOWED;
SHOES MUST BE WORN ON THE RUN

2. Another good size field is expected so your cooperation in registering early is appreciated.

3. Your assistance with setting up or packing away is also a given. Our events are all volunteer run, so please volunteer and not leave this to the same people race after race. Thanks .... I knew we just had to give you a gentle reminder and things would get done in no time at all.

JUNIOR UPDATE:

The Junior race on Sunday was another great success and held at the beautiful setting surrounding the Darwin Ski Club. The distances were longer than usual in order to give the kids a hit-out for their upcoming Championships. It is great to report all kids finished the course.

We tried the new 2 way radios out and they worked a treat – really makes the Marshals job easier ! The kids are all ready for the upcoming NT Junior Championships and presentation Tri starting 8am sharp on Sunday 29 March 09 at the Boat ramp end of Lake Alexander. Come down on the day and cheer them on! More info on this next E News.
ARAFURA GAMES NEWS:

1. TNT is seeking expressions of interest from NT Arafura Games Triathlon competitors who would like to march in the Opening Ceremony. Up to 30 triathletes will be allowed to participate. All those who wish to march will need to buy an Arafura Walk Out Uniform at $50. Please email attached order form to Symone on eo@triathlonnt.com.au by NO LATER THAN Tuesday 24 March. No late submissions can be accepted. Payments should be made by EFT to the Triathlon NT account (BSB 805 050, Account no. 623 45897, Australian Central Credit Union) and receipts emailed to eo@triathlonnt.com.au. As numbers are limited, places in the march will be awarded on a first in, best dressed basis.

2. Volunteers are required for the Arafura Games Triathlon to assist with a number of tasks, both in the lead-up and on the day. More details on specific jobs will be provided shortly, but in the meantime please email Kylie on shefs@aapt.net.au if you are willing to lend a hand. Your assistance will be very much appreciated.

3. Members are encouraged to register early for the Arafura Games Triathlon. Online accreditation (entry) is via http://www.arafuragames.nt.gov.au/ Fill out Part 1 and then you will be sent a password to re enter the site to fill out event specific details. Your Medicare number and TA number are required so have them to hand.

4. The NT Olympic Distance Championships are held in conjunction with Arafura. NT athletes will be asked to complete another form for this but the important thing at the moment is to get anyone doing the Arafura Games Triathlon to register online now.

5. Teams can compete in the event but there are no Arafura Games medals awarded ie no Team category via the Arafura system. There will be a team medal for 1st team in the NT OD Champs. Instructions on how to enter as a Team to come but meanwhile get your teams sorted and ready to go.

6. To visualise the awards system, think: On the day one official, formal Arafura Games medal presentation in the categories: 16-19 years, 20-24 years and Open (the rest of us) takes place. The Arafura Games is based on developing athletes hence the focus on younger competitors.

The formal part out of the way, the NT OD Champs presentation will then happen. Perpetual trophies for first NT male and female will be given out as well as medals for NT winners in the various age groups and winning team.

7. Second time around this should be making more sense. If not, ask for more info at our next club event.

OTHER NEWS:

1. We need new technical officials ! Desperately ! Can you spare a few hours to do a Tech Official Course a couple of weeks prior to Arafura Games ? Please email phil.blumberg@nt.gov.au with your contact details. This is an ideal opportunity to learn the rules of triathlon and to give back to the sport occasionally. Check out the list of tech officials on the club website ... we would love to be able to add some new names to that list. So email Phil and let him know you can attend and perhaps give a date/time preference as well.
2. A number of members head to Singapore this weekend for Ironman 70.3 Singapore. Those having a go at the distance for the first time include Jane Marie Kerslake, Bertram Birk, Dave McLeod and Belinda Birk. Michelle Gailey and Daryl Stanley will line up for their third Singapore 70.3. Good luck to all, have fun.

3. The 70.3 events continue to increase in popularity worldwide. Two new events have recently been added to the calendar - KL in Malaysia and the Philippines.

4. Chris McCormack and Craig Alexander as well as Olympian Simon Thompson (title holder) will be in action at Singapore.

5. Enough is enough, that's an overload of TRI info for today.

TRIATHLON TRIVIA:

Q: What is the closing date for online accreditation (entry) for the Arafura Games Triathlon ?

A: 10 APRIL 2009 (Absolutely, positively, no extensions ... so get cracking and do it NOW).

Hi All,

Hope you all managed to get your training done in between the storms over the weekend. Those pesky little dragonflies certainly got it wrong last week.

News that a 1.7m saltie was caught in the Botanical Gardens yesterday is a reminder to keep your eyes open when you are out there training. Imagine running down the path near the fountain and bumping into a strolling croc !
