Robyn's E News 20 Jan 2010

Photo: Underway - Race 1 Aquathlon Series

Hi All,

The weather gods have been good to us of late. With so many people targeting longer events, members are popping up all over the place on the bike and/or running doing longer sessions so it's great to have the weather finally onside for even a few days.

On running, isn't it interesting where you find water sources and plan your runs accordingly? I'm thinking of launching a mission to have water bubblers fixed at McMillans Road roundabout and also Lee Point/Vanderlin roundabout. They are pretty much museum pieces and haven't worked in forever but are strategically placed. I've often wished I could still get a drink at both places.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Way over the top - 2XU’s newest product for 2010: A $900 wetsuit named “Project X”. So who will be the first up here in one of these I wonder?

2. Good luck to the "bold and courageous" Phil Brownscombe who will be tackling the Audax Alpine Classic 200km MTB event from Bright, Vic on Sunday.

3. Kyle Gear has been on a steep triathlon learning curve of late. He's been down training with a development squad in NSW and Vic and having his first taste of draft legal racing. It's tbc whether Kyle will be in action in Canberra at the weekend.

4. Chad Anderson definitely on the way to ACT for the Australia Triathlon Champs. Good luck to him & to all those competing in the National Capital.

5. President of Cairns Crocs Tri Club says he and a few other members are heading for Guam for the xterra event there & thought some of our members may be interested. It's a 1km ocean swim, 35km mountain bike non technical bike ride & a 8km run with the last part being through water falls & rivers. How awesome would that be. Date 27 March 2010.

Prices are still being worked out for them but about $1500 should cover air fares from Cairns $820 pp, entry fee $70 & 6 days accommodation depending on numbers & accommodation standards. It's about a 4 hour flight north into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Continental Airways fly direct from Cairns but not every day. Further info on attached flier or see www.xterraguam.com

6. Paul Bell has been out riding with Phil Liggett. Locals think it's great weather but Paul has yet to ditch the armwarmers.

7. Great to see Vincent Gilly is back training after his recent near death experience on the bike.

8. There's been more lane juggling at swim squad. Graeme Parsons appears to have ditched the latte lane for good; we welcomed Tara Luck back after a couple of years absence; Louise Ogden has also made a welcome reappearance; Liam Johnson fitted in nicely in the superstar lane; Phil Hatty was seen to be leading the middle lane and Korgan Hucent is going for a PB of straight attendances.

9. Don't forget coverage of the Tour Down Under is nightly on SBS.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you are tempted to do your long rides in togs so you don't have tan lines visible for your next race.
... you are convinced that if you rest more than one day your muscles will atrophy & everyone in your age group will beat you at the next race
... you see your kids playing pretend transition set ups

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Robyn's E News 18 Jan 2010

Hi All,

So much info in this E News it's probably worth having a coffee break !

We had a great turnout of competitors and spectators at Nightcliff Pool on Saturday. Thanks to Race Director Kylie Sheffield (who somehow managed to get the approaching storms to hold off until after the event) and all who assisted. Without our enthusiastic members who volunteer to assist at our events they just wouldn't happen.

Some newer members raced with us for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Welcome to the best club in town (and I think, Australia) to all our recently arrived members.

Junior Training Updates:

Lee has sent through the following info on junior sessions:

Swim/Bike/Run session at Casuarina pool recommences this Tuesday (note day change) this session is available to senior and junior members of all abilities ($3:00 to coach + pool entry). Session starts a 6pm so please arrive with enough time to set up wind trainers. Seniors will require a wind trainer for this session, we have wind trainers available for juniors so please advise if you are attending to ensure we have enough available. Any questions please contact Lee (lee.wilson@ausport.gov.au) or call 0437 700 422

Junior Tack Session has recommenced on Mondays 5-6pm at Marrara track. This session is suitable for all junior 11+ and is focussed on technique and speed work. All abilities are welcome ($3:00). If parent have any questions please contact Lee (lee.wilson@ausport.gov.au) or call 0437 700 422

Junior Group ride has also resumed. This will be Saturday afternoons 4-5pm except the weekend of the 30th Jan when we will switch to Sunday due to the Aquathlon Champs. Any juniors who have not attended this session will need to contact Lee beforehand to discuss ability level.

OTHER NEWS:

1. There is news that the stork will remain busy this year. Kylie and Paul Sheffield are expecting a new arrival mid year. Fantastic news!

2. I believe Kyle Gear was in action again down south over the weekend but results are yet to be sourced.

3. Parents of youngsters will be interested to hear that Hollies learn to swim program has now moved to Jingili. 10 wk term starts 25th Jan, for babies to intermediate children as pool is only 12mtrs long. To enrol phone Hollie: 0421 500 286

4. Peta Jeggo is that latest of our members to report being "attacked" by quite a large fish while swimming in the waterfront lagoon. Apparently it comes up from underneath and sucks at people's stomach area. And reportedly it is quite a persistent sucker fish....and quite un-nerving for even an accomplished swimmer. The Darwin Waterfront Corporation is looking into how to manage this.

5. A couple of our members have suggested a spear gun would do the trick!

6. At the recent Hobart Cadbury Marathon, Caine Warburton finished in 12th in 2.55.52. Caine says "the race was good but quite hilly with 3-4 hills per lap (2 lap race) and a INSANSE hill in the last 800m of the race (bigger and steeper than we have here that's for sure)" The race temp was around 20 deg he thinks.

7. Wet season warning - please be very, very careful riding across railway tracks in wet weather. There have been a few recent incidents where cyclists have come to grief. I've seen and heard of so many over the years I now get off and walk over rather than risk ending up in the middle of traffic minus a lot of skin !

8. OMGosh, Flickr views are at 34,559 ! I'll get photos up from weekend asap. The photos on Flickr are automatically reduced in size. If you would like original let me know and I'll forward.

9. Would you believe I think I have worn out a mouse! Frustration level high doing this E News. Off to find a replacement that will behave nicely in the highlight, cut, paste and drag functions.

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
