Hi All,

It's great to see everyone out training with so much enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment. We are indeed lucky to live and train in Tri Paradise! ("Tri Heaven" being reserved for Kona)

We are also extremely fortunate to have such an active committee & coaches and a culture of volunteering which is second to none. Because of their efforts we are spoilt with event choices and training opportunities all at a fraction of the cost of "down south".

We have had many people come along and "tri" our activities of late. On behalf of our President John Thyne & the committee I would like to encourage those athletes to join up and become part of the club we are so very proud of. We have a shed load of events coming up on our calendar and joining up is a great incentive to come along and participate on a regular basis.

Joining is easy just go to https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/
On the right, click "new member registration"

You will then be asked:

What state - select NT
Do you live in that state - select Yes
Do wish to join club - select Yes
Club box will then appear - select Darwin Triathlon Club
Membership type - select Individual (the system works out if you are junior or senior by your date of birth)

Then click continue ... add personal details
Proceed to payment ... $110 seniors $40 juniors (you will then be a Darwin Tri Club, Triathlon NT & TA member).

Training sessions offered by coaches are listed on our club website

OTHER NEWS:

1. Due to bookings at the Trailer Boat Club, Darwin Surf Club has had to change the date of their Fannie Bay Swim Classic. The new date is now 20th June 2010 with a 10.30am start.

2. Updated scores: Railway lines on Wishart Road 3, cyclists 0 .... Chad Anderson, Heath Porter and Nic French all bounced around in the rain inspecting the bitumen on Saturday morning. Which bit of "get off and walk over in the rain" is in an unintelligible foreign language I wonder? This time, not to much damage to body and bikes ... thank goodness !

3. The Darwin Athletics Club is looking for a paid part time coach. Further details see: http://www.darwinathletics.org.au)

4. One of our members works at Wickham Point. Yesterday (between 6 - 7 am), two lots of two cyclists were seen (by many on early shift) riding up and then down Channel Island Road, putting themselves (and to a certain degree also others) at risk. One pair were at times riding abreast, with the person in the middle of the road practically not visible from behind because of an ineffective, or not existing, tail light. Motorists had to slow down to the speed of the cyclists (approx 30km/hr) before they could safely overtake the group due to oncoming traffic. This incident was then brought-up by workers during their shift pre-start meeting.

You can imagine how hard it is trying to defend the rights of cyclists as road users in situations like this.

Channel Point Road on weekdays is quite busy between 6 - 8am. It is also worth mentioning that there is an increasing number of people currently travelling to and from Darwin LNG Plant due to some planning activities for this year's major Plant Shut Down. During the Shut Down itself, which will be held in April and May, an estimated 400 people will be working on site on a 24/7 rotating roster. It is believed that some of those people will be taken on site with buses but it is important to know that there will be even more traffic on those roads than normal. A lot of interstate workers, not familiar with the local roads, will be amongst the people travelling to the site and (as experienced in the past) their driving habits are sometimes a bit less defensive than the average local's. They may also not be used to our road and weather conditions.

It would be timely to suggest here that all cyclists take every effort to be highly visible on our roads and that all traffic rules are obeyed.
We would hate to see anyone getting injured (or worse) doing what we all love to do.

5. Noosa Triathlon entries open online 1 June 2010.

6. Lance Armstrong has been spotted training in Hawaii, on a TT bike, in very "tri" positioning.

7. Those looking to validate for Ironman Australia 2011 need to target one of the following events:

Busselton Half Ironman
Saturday, May 1
Busselton, WA

Capricorn Half Ironman
Sunday, August 15
Yeppoon, QLD

Gold Coast Half Ironman
Sunday, October 3
Gold Coast, QLD

Port Macquarie Half Ironman
Sunday, October 31
Port Macquarie, NSW

Shepparton Half Ironman
Sunday, November 14
Shepparton, VIC

Canberra City Half Ironman
Sunday, December 12
Canberra, ACT

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you can't see what all the fuss is about - seeing guys in speedos doesn't seem that big a deal to you
... you can use "easy" and "10" in the same sentence
... you have running shoes in varying degrees of decomposition including: used, well-worn, spent but still good, and useless but "I keep them just in case"

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Robyn's E News 15 Feb 2010

Hi All,

We had a fantastic turn out for the Mountain Bike Triathlon at Lake Alexander yesterday morning. Competitors may have ended up a tad muddy but the format was enjoyed by all.

A huge thank you to RD Paul Sheffield and the other volunteers who helped stage this event. Competitors really appreciate the time and effort put in by fellow club members. I hear that the far water stop was a very welcome sight indeed !

OTHER NEWS:

1. Erica Reeve made an absolutely stunning bride & Aaron looked very much the proud groom at their alpine wedding.

2. Media Hound: Paul Sheffield was heard chatting to Macca on Australia All Over while setting up for the mountain bike triathlon at Lake Alexander ! People all over Australia heard about our event.

3. Weekend form guide: Ali Croser is ready to race; Lachlan Hatty & Connor McLeod conquered the Lake Bennett bike course; Rachel De Zoete has IM NZ firmly in her sights; ditto Andy Jones; Paul Tilbrook is looking buffed and running well and Lisa Quinell starred with her mtb skills.

4. Pro Matty White won the SA state Olympic Distance Champs yesterday and won a couple of crayfish.

5. Lake Bennett & surrounds resembled Pitt St over the weekend with many targeting upcoming long events training down there. Some impressive form on display !

6. Daryl Stanley also had a camp happening at Lake Bennett and once again the locals pinched his run witch's hats. Many of you will remember when a tarp, table and chairs set up for our drink stop at club champs at Lake B also "walked". Moral of the story, put it out on a Lake B road and it won't last five minutes.

6. Bali International Triathlon (20 June 2010) entry is now open. Organisers have generously offered a discount on entry to our members and say:

Have you ever had your bike blessed before a race? Have you ever had the Four Seasons host and cater your pre-race dinner? Have you ever swam in the clear warm waters of the Jimbaran Bay, cycled through the lush green hills of Nusa Dua, or run through the markets of the Jimbaran Village?
Well here is your chance! The fourth annual MRA Bali International Triathlon will be held on June 20, 2010 in Jimbaran Bay, Bali, Indonesia. The utmost comfort and class will be emphasized for this Olympic distance triathlon, as the Four Seasons is a key sponsor. Most importantly, the race will be held in one of the most beautiful and spiritual settings in the world, Bali. If you have never been there, it is an incredible place to visit, let alone to race in. Truly, triathlon for the soul.

Special race packages are available on the website, http://www.balitriathlon.com, and a limited number of heavily discounted Four Seasons Packages are also available. So plan that destination vacation you’ve always wanted and stay a few extra days to explore the lush jungles, dive in some of the most coveted reefs of the world, shop in a unique multicultural center, and even enjoy a Balinese massage. There is also a corporate challenge relay team entry, and a 5k “Fun Run,” available to get the whole family involved.

You can register at Go Adventure Asia: http://www.goadventureasia.com/bit.shtml

Club members can type in BaliTri2010 into the discount code section to get $15 USD off the registration fee (good until March 31, 2010).

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
