Photo: Just another registration volunteer !

Hi All,

What a brilliant day for our Kerran Mudgway Memorial Club Championships! In one of our largest fields, athletes experienced the "mildest" of Lake B conditions, including a sprinkle of rain at the far end of the bike course. The cloud cover also helped keep the temperatures down during the run.

A lot of effort was required to set up this event. Just getting the trailer to Lake Bennett and back is an huge undertaking.

Race director Rob Brooks was on the job and handled it all brilliantly. Rob also toiled in the midday sun to have the course set up and ready for us. We really appreciate Rob's events.

Also appreciated are the efforts of the many people who assisted prior to and on the day. Setting up the permits, swim course, water safety, registration, drink stations, timing, and a million other jobs were all done by Rob and other volunteers for our benefit.

A huge thank you to those who pitched in to help make our club championships such a successful event.

OTHER NEWS:

1. ITU News: Age-Group athletes can now obtain direct qualification spots for the ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships at all Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series races. In 2010 Seoul, Madrid, Hamburg, London and Kitzbühel will carry qualification places to race in the ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships at the Grand Final of the series. Seventy-six slots will be available at each of the Standard Distance Age-Group races at the series events. The quota per age category is based on the participation numbers from the previous ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships.

Athletes competing in Seoul, Madrid and Hamburg will obtain spots for the 2010 ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships in Budapest, while athletes competing in London and Kitzbühel will secure a starting position at the 2011 ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships in Beijing; getting a unique chance to compete on the 2008 Olympic course.

There will be a roll down system if any of the spots are unclaimed. This roll down system will only apply to athletes finishing in the top 10 of their age category. After finishing the race, all athletes who have finished in the top 10 of their category and who wish to register for the Grand Final must go to the registration area and must submit their details. The registration process will finish 30 minutes after the last athlete crosses the finish line. Athletes should look for more details about the post race registration at the event.

All athletes who qualify through this system must still abide by the rules and regulations of their national federation for competing at the Grand Final. Sign up to one of the races today to get your chance to obtain one of these qualification spots now.

For more information on the Series, or to sign up for an event, visit http://wcs.triathlon.org

2. Media Hound: Our president John Thyne went to extraordinary lengths to get a mention this section (but overlooked a golden opportunity to promote the sport) ! There are also easier ways to get a mention in NT News. See attached pdf. Also attached NT News preview of club championships.

3. Roger Decurtins will be taking extra care next time he packs up after a late race. Roger went into full panic when he arrived home to find he was down a race wheel. Due to the dark, he had missed placing the wheel in the car & had visions of it squished. All's good. The intact wheel is on it's way back to Roger courtesy a fellow club member.

4. There were a number of people making Lake Bennett debut appearances on Saturday. As usual, the way they handled the "hill" on the bike course the second time around, was widely discussed at the finish line.

5. Fantastic efforts by those on the water station handing out much needed fluid and iced sponges. Much appreciated.

6. Nerida Godfrey got to Lake B to find she needed a new tube and tyre! Lucky she was able to contact home and they arrived in time. No such luck for Monica Stewart who found she had missed packing her bike shoes.

7. Some of you are quick off the mark ! A couple of Uniform orders were received back in record time. Please have those back by 9am Friday so the order can be placed in time for delivery prior to the Olympic Distance championships.

8. Competitors got underway at 5.30am this morning in the Alice Ultra. Dedicated to the memory of Tavis Johannsen the 2/60/15 event started early and is followed by two further race start times for shorter distance events. Good luck to all competitors.

9. Thousands of athletes worldwide are leaving their goggles and wetsuits at home and focusing on duathlon instead. The popularity of run-bike-run events has surged in recent years. Date claimer for members: 19 September 2010, Darwin will host a duathlon (5km run/20km bike/2.5 run) which we expect will qualify athletes for World Champs in Spain next year. Watch this space.

10. There were a few potholes out at Lake Bennett on Saturday but a fantastic job was done to ensure they were very visible to competitors.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you can continue to run even though you know the result will be a huge blister
... you have already placed your order for club gear
... you have cleaned those sticky Gu drops off your bike

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
