Hi All,

Good to have the weather on the improve (finally) with more and more dry patches happening.

Watch shortly for a club uniform order. Hoping this time to have IDS tops (M & F) available (no sleeves, wide shoulder, pockets) and fatigue pants and have made enquiries about chlorine resist budgie smugglers for the guys as well. Currently awaiting pricing.

Because all the effort is voluntary, uniform orders work on a payment with order system and require minimum numbers to proceed. Many of you ask why we don't just have items in stock ... our experience over many years tells us that the lycra does not last indefinitely in our climate and unsold stock can deteriorate .. a cost the club does not wish to carry. So when the order goes out, don't miss out .. get in quick.

OTHER NEWS:

1. From www.mirror.co.uk A man of 90 has completed a triathlon – and said he “enjoyed every minute of it”. Arthur Gilbert completed the event in Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset, for a 20th time. He did a 250m swim, a six-mile bike ride and a 1.5-mile run in one hour, 20 minutes and nine seconds. His granddaughter Natalie said: “Arthur’s a true legend in the family. What he does is almost unbelievable – he is a true inspiration.”

2. Media Hound: Wrap from Lake Bennett in the NT News and also see attached pdf.

3. Last week NT cycling coaches Tim Ellison and Bec Thyne took 15 junior cyclists, inc two junior triathletes Chynna Godfrey & Joel Kay, MTB'ers and BMX'ers to Alice springs to combine with 22 Alice juniors for a track cycling development camp before the NT track championships held on Friday night and Saturday. They had a fantastic coach from Melbourne, Cam McFarlane, running the camp with them. The kids learned important bike skills, race construction skills and off the bike skills. The ability level ranged from beginner to experienced and saw an improvement in 100% of the kids from timed runs on day 1 to timed races on the Saturday. The camp will be run at a similar time next year and is suitable for all juniors interested in bike riding from U/15 upwards. The huge development and confidence progression seen in many of the kids is indicative of the benefits a few days of intensive practice can have. That said, the development camps are not just about cycling, they are about gaining living away from home skills, learning to interact with different people and becoming independent. Further info on future junior cycling camps, weekly training sessions, etc contact Tim (0437 602 346) or Bec (0408 878 689) direct.

4. Also at the Track cycling, Minister for Sport Karl Hampton presented Tim with the NT's Cycling Australia Volunteer of the Year award. Congrats Tim.

5. Margaret Black missed the Sydney Triathlon due to flu. We wish Margaret a speedy recovery.

6. Reminder Fannie Bay Swim date is 26 June 2011 - around 10am start.

7. A number of STTA Presidents & the president of TA competed in the Sydney Triathlon. I hear Triathlon NT's Dave McLeod narrowly missed having the fastest time, just pipped by WA president !

8. Also heard that our club treasurer Jane Marie Kerslake did a great impersonation of Superman when she fell on the run in Sydney.

9. Entry for the Laguna Phuket Triathlon (weekend prior to the 70.3) is sold out.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you are cycling in Canberra (4-15 degrees) in long sleeves, thermals, jacket, beanie and are cold while others ride by in shorts
... you know the dimensions of a Qantas bike box
... you don't care where, when, or what format - if the club puts on the event you will be there

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Photo: TA President Peter Hedge shares a moment with 2011 Australian Triathlon Series F55-59 category winner Monica Stewart.

Hi All,

Sometimes we throw up some little gems, and Saturday afternoon's Kerran Mudgway Memorial Club Championships is up there with the best.

As if the course wasn't enough (a couple of washed out areas on the bike had competitors dismounting at those sections); we also had news of freshwater croc sightings (little ones), eau de decaying cane toad on the air and to finish off ... a doozie of a storm to drive home in !

But the real excitement was caused by the women's field where the race was wide open and the girls did battle for podium places. Veteran Vicki Woodrow called on all her years of experience to reel in the younger brigade and tough it out to the finish. Vicki had to hold out a fast finishing Ryoko Jones who also came from behind but ran out of road in her pursuit of the gallant Vicki. Shaye Hatty gave it everything to stay on the podium for 3rd after cruising in 2nd for awhile. Rowie and Steph were up there & challenging at various stages and further back in the pack Peta Jeggo and Karen Wilson went head to head all day and fittingly finished with a deadheat .... great racing girls and fantastic to watch.

Our thanks to RD Jack Pennington and the great team of volunteers who assisted with all aspects of this event. We really appreciate your efforts on behalf of the club. We even had a couple of guys from the Darwin Cycle Club helping out ... thanks guys! And a special thank you to Brian Gallagher and Moira Wigley who provided water safety for both waves before starting their own races late. Much appreciate your efforts.

BICYLE HELMET STANDARDS UPDATE:

1. Triathlon rules state that your helmet must comply to current safety standards.

2. Safety standards were updated in December 2010.

3. Please see attached specifications to ensure your helmet is compliant.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. Items for next E News by 8pm tomorrow please.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Congratulations to Monica Stewart. Mon's 2nd place in F55-59 in Sydney yesterday secured the Australia Triathlon Series category title (1st Geelong, 2nd Mooloolaba [Aust C'ships] & 2nd Sydney). Mon is now looking forward to a well earned rest ! (Full results next E News).

2. Kelly Rowe was 8th in her age group at the Hilary's Triathlon in WA over the weekend. Kelly had a tough swim, lots of chop and also was stung.

3. Can you believe it ... after a jam packed few months we now have a few weeks off prior to Arafura. I know all the hard working volunteers (and you see the same faces all the time) will welcome a chance to draw a breath before they ramp it up for Arafura.

4. The Sydney ITU race is being televised on One HD this morning at 9am (for those of you with access to the box).

5. Also on Arafura, Lake Alex remains closed but it being carefully monitored. Still hope that we will go ahead as planned. Organisers aren't looking to shift to Lake Bennett (one look at the road on the way out scotched that idea, not to mention sheer logistics) ... further LOC discussions will take place.

6. More on Arafura ... we will be welcoming international entrants from PNG, Macau and Singapore and a large contingent of interstate competitors.

7. Good to have Lachie Hatty back home for awhile and in the field at the Club Champs at the weekend. Lachie (and Will Birk) have been hitting school rowing with some success.

8. And still on younger Hatty's ... Jack is proving to be a chip of the old block judging by the dance moves at the finish line on Saturday evening !

9. We have an awesome crew of 2nd generation tri supporters ... those kids know many of the competitors names and have all the right things to say to encourage competitors. Even the 3 year olds get into the spirit !

10. Great to see some of our Katherine members & supporters making it up for the club championships.

11. Next weekend tri action shifts of Alice Springs Tri Club. They have a big weekend of triathlon planned and you are very welcome to participate if you are down that way.

12. Media Hound: http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/04/09/223571_ntsport.html and also see attached.

13. Chrissie Wellington smashed the course record at Ironman South Africa and was 8th overall.

14. Uniform re order being organised - stay tuned.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you are completely frustrated when event results aren't posted for hours and hours and hours
... after two weeks of doing nothing you can feel your muscles losing the battle
... you are thinking you will definitely be in the field for Sydney next year, the course looked awesome for the age groupers.

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
