Robyn's E News 18 May 2011

Photo: Simon has been looking after our equipment for a number of years. He needs a break .... can you help?

Hi All,

Great news ! We have been successful in obtaining permission to use the Waterfront Lagoon for our teams event on Sunday (see info below).

A couple of things we wish to highlight - parking meters in the area apply on Sunday & they are patrolled, so no grizzling if you park there, go overtime & get booked. The other is that this is our first morning start at this venue. With Lake A out of action, we need to build a great relationship so we will be welcomed back. With this in mind, we ask members to avoid making any unnecessary noise so that resident's get to enjoy their Sunday sleep in & no complaints are lodged about the event.

RESULTS:

1. Epic 250 Leadman Triathlon, 5km swim, 223km bike, 22km run (250k in total), Nevada

Teams Event

Event status: CLUB (must be a member to participate)

Roster:

Race Director: John Thyne
Registration: Korgan Hucent / Damien Brown

Note:

1. Swim will be two laps in the area inside the net. (So no risk of swimming with the big fish)
2. Ride two laps on Kitchener Road and the Deck Chair cinema road.

3. Run one lap similar to the splash and dash swim.

4. Kitchener Road is a little rough in places and has some loose surface. Competitors should consider using their training wheels and mountain bikes may even be a good option. Remember this is a fun novelty race so speed is not everything. There are also three very sharp speed humps on this course which will need to be ridden over with care.

5. Team are to be made up of three people and the race will be in a relay format. A competitor can only do one leg at a time.

6. Teams are encouraged to be mixed. Team themes also encouraged.

7. Parking Warning: Parking is metered (2 hours) in the Waterfront area between 7am-10pm and that applies to Sunday as well. The multi story car park is free for the first 2 hours but may not open until 7am. More info on parking: http://www.waterfront.nt.gov.au/darwin-waterfront-precinct/parking/

8. This is a residential area so members are asked not to make too much noise before and during the race (we want to be allowed back).

COMMITTEE NEWS:

1. Date for Darwin Triathlon Club Annual General Meeting has been set for Sunday 28 August 2011.

2. Is there someone with accounting or bookkeeping skills who would be willing to take over from our long serving treasurer Jane Marie who will be stepping down?

3. Also needing a break is our super equipment man Simon who has also been in that position for a number of years. If you can assist with looking after the club equipment, trailer & shed we would love to hear from you.

2. Chris McCormack's new book has just been released. "I'm Here to Win" has moved to #8 on Amazon's Sports list.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you come home from a long run with chaffing & the responsible shorts go straight in the bin instead of the washing machine
... you throw out those see through nicks before they are commented on by following riders (hint - if you hold them up to the light and you can see through them ... so can everyone else)
... you love doing a long ride on your own for the quality reflection and thinking time it provides

Safe Training,
Cheers,

JUNIOR NEWS:

Congratulations to all our juniors who competed in this year’s Arafura Games. From all reports there were some great performances and personal best times.

1. Our junior triathlon team (Louise Jettner, Imogen Teale, Michael Collins) won silver & all did a great job over the longer distance. This was the first year we have had a junior division and we hope to have many more juniors competing in two years time.

2. Lara Whitehouse won silver in the 5km open water swim in 1:12:08. That’s an incredible time and something that most of our senior Ironman athletes would be very impressed with. There were also a number of others who competed in other swimming events and Joseph White who competed in squash, so it’s great to see such versatility of sports amongst our juniors … Well Done All!

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. FOR SALE: 2009 Black medium/tall 2XU model C:2 wetsuit. Long sleeves. Perfect condition - rarely worn. $150 Contact Ron 0407 117 448

2. Items or requests for advt re runs by 8pm tomorrow please.
OTHER NEWS:

1. Official photos from Arafura Games Triathlon are available for purchase at http://www.woodleyimages.com/ArafuraGames2011/Triathlon/17013554_kqp4wr#1287514291_Bd4KdPw

2. Arafura Games competitors and volunteers celebrated the end of the Games at the closing ceremony on Saturday night. Thanks again to all those who volunteered at our triathlon, without you it wouldn't happen.

3. Challenge Cairns and Cairns Half in a couple of weeks has attracted many of our members and they are training hard. For some it will be their first Ironman or Half Ironman distance event.

4. The cancellation of IM China and China 70.3 has upset the plans of a few of our members.

5. DTC committee is currently working on 2011/2012 Events Calendar ... not an easy task with the Lake Alex venue no longer a certainty.

6. On the poo lution problem ... oops I had a rant here, you will be pleased I have reconsidered dumping it on our members and pressed delete !

7. Some of our members went through the frustrating process of hitting the refresh button a million times and were successful in gaining entry for Ironman Australia at Port Mac next year. Congrats ... getting an entry in these days seems harder than all the training !

8. No date yet set for 70.3 Port Mac. Reactions of punters to having both events on the same day was mixed. May well be that we won't have a 70.3 at Port next year or it may go back to it's original date.

9. Here at home we are fast approaching the time when we set the date for our AGM. Now is the time to start thinking whether you would be able to contribute to the club & the sport by putting up your hand for a position on the DTC committee. If the answer is yes, have a chat to those currently in those positions.

10. And while the committee is busy setting our calendar for next year, please remember our events are conducted by our club members for our club members on a voluntary basis. Have you thanked a volunteer recently or done your bit for the club? Once the calendar is set, we will be asking members to fill in the date & position they can help out in 2011/2012 and we look forward to being inundated with offers. Watch this space !

11. The uniform order has been submitted to Cannibal and should be back in time for Cairns.

12. Photos from Arafura race brief and event are up on Flickr.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you understand "more is not better" when it comes to triathlon training
... you have already purchased your wetsuit in anticipation of swimming all through the dry season
... you have booked flights or accommodation for a triathlon that is still over six months away

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

9. And speaking of Simon. On behalf of DTC committee, he and Phill Hatty met with Darwin City Council late last week to discuss Lake Alexander issues. Our calendar for next season is currently being reviewed and the issues with water quality at Lake A will obviously impact there. The committee is also speaking to the Waterfront Corporation with a view to conducting additional events at that location.

10. News is out that Ironman China and the 70.3 have been reduced to a ride/run. I wonder what that means for ITU Worlds scheduled for Beijing?

...you don't just want to finish strong
...you want to finish & be on the podium!

Hi All,

It's bucketing rain ... just as well we raced yesterday !

Congratulations to all our members who competed in the Arafura Games Triathlon yesterday, especially those who went the longer distance for the first time.

2011 will be remembered as the year the swim had to be changed due to poo lution . The pool swim at Parap worked extremely well and many athletes commented afterwards how surprised they were, but that we obviously know what we are doing !

A big thank you to RD Col Smith on behalf of all the competitors. Col again injected his very individual style to the race brief and approached his task with a ton of energy. Col was assisted over the weekend by an awesome band of volunteers who gave generously of their time and energy.

Our volunteers are too numerous to list here but we will be thanking them more formally over the days to come. Col & all the volunteers can now let out a collective sigh of relief that it's all over.

Many people may be unaware of the the many hours the Event Coordinator contributed during the months leading up to the event. Our thanks also go to Anna Goat for her tireless efforts behind the scenes which ensured the weekend went ahead with the minimum of hiccups.
