Hi All,

We hope you are all looking forward to the first event of the new 2011/2012 Season at Lake Alexander on Sunday.

At committee level work is continuing on next season's calendar and we will get that circulated asap calling for volunteers for the RD, registration, timekeeping and fruit/ice positions. These have to be filled before the calendar can go to print. There is an expectation that all members will volunteer at least once in a season. Any gaps are filled with names not already on the calendar.

We are also happy to let you know that we have a couple of capable & enthusiastic members who have volunteered to assist with our Presentation Night Dinner arrangements. Watch for further details!

The awards committee is also looking into our various winners and this is now your last chance to send in details of the daggy doings noticed out there over the past 12 months. All contributions will be forever anonymous and can be forwarded to darwintriclub89@bigpond.com now.

OTHER NEWS:

1. A reminder from NT Swimming that this Saturday’s Gatorade Open Water Meet at the Waterfront Lagoon has a 4pm start time instead of the early morning start originally advertised. Registrations: 3.10-3.40pm; Race Briefing: 3.45pm. Entry form attached if you want to save time at the registration table. .

2. There is also an 800m handicap Community Swim will be held by Surf Lifesaving NT after the Swimming NT events – a fun event for all.

3. Many of you will remember young Alistair Donohoe cracking whips at our Pine Creek MTB tris and later as he developed into a fine young triathlete & cyclist, before he headed off to school in Victoria.

Over summer Alistair was in the Victorian U17 Track Team and was part of the Team Pursuit that scored a Gold at the National champs. He managed to get into A grade at the Sandown crits and raced about 4 races before summer ended - significant because he was the only 16 year old there, restricted gears and still on the old Trek. Mum Amanda lashed out then and bought him a new bike.

It is now the road season. He was selected to be part of a National Talent Identification Squad that went to Tasmania where he won the U17 Mersey Valley Junior tour with pelaton tactics that could only have been learnt at Hidden Valley. Mum Amanda says modestly that he does not do brilliantly at every race but is generally in the first bunch over the line. Looking ahead to the U19's they know that next year it will be a lot tougher especially as he will compete against the likes of a guy called Alex Morgan - a cycling freak. We wish Alistair all the best as he continues with his sporting pursuits (which still include the occasional triathlon).

4. You can now LIKE the new Darwin Triathlon Club PAGE on Facebook. The old DTC Facebook Group will be shut down shortly. Make sure you make the switch to continue to get your updates.

5. I have a couple of uniform orders still to be collected. Please collect from me on Sunday at Lake Alexander.

6. Registrations for Level 1 Coaching Course to be held in Darwin (16-17 July) close Monday 4 July 2011. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you iron your race bibs & file or display them for future admiration
... you find yourself saying "on your left" as you pass other trolleys at the supermarket
... your inventory of visors & caps is enormous but as many are event specific, you can't bring yourself to throw any away

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

ARAFURA GAMES SURVEY:

1. The Arafura Games would like to thank those of you who took part in the 2011 Arafura Games. Whether you were a competitor, official, volunteer or a spectator, they hope you enjoyed the Games.

2. In order for them to continue to improve the running of future Arafura Games they invite you to take part in their online survey about the 2011 Arafura Games.

3. The survey should take just about 10 minutes, but the information they will be able to gather from your responses will be invaluable for the successful running of the 2013 Games and beyond.

4. Please go to www.arafuragames.nt.gov.au and click on the link on the left-hand side of the page: “2011 Arafura Games Survey”.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Michelle Mitchell backed up after 2nd in Challenge Cairns earlier this month, with an overall win in the Bali International Triathlon. She was 4 mins ahead of the first male competitor. Kate Robertson was 3rd female overall and Shaye Hatty was 4th. Way to go Territory gals !

2. Congratulations to Claire Goldsmith & Liam Johnson who were married in Darwin over the weekend.

3. Our juniors did well over the weekend with Lara Whitehouse 1st Female in the 2.1km Fannie Bay Swim, Michael Collins 1st Male in the 1.2km Fannie Bay Swim and Bella Hatty 2nd in the 5km Bali Tri Run.

4. A warning to cyclists to be alert when cycling around the Mango loop. One of our members was chased and bitten by a blue heeler out that way over the weekend and needed tetanus injection and antibiotics. She is in no doubt she would have been ripped apart if she had come off her bike.

5. For information on reporting dog attacks see http://www.darwin.nt.gov.au/live/animals-and-pets/dogs/dog-attacks

6. While on reporting problems, in the NT some cyclepaths are maintained by the local Council and others by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure. If you notice a problem with the road/path you are riding on, the vegetation, or anything else, go to the site below to report it. http://www.nt.gov.au/transport/ntroads/faults/cyclepaths/index.shtml Your report will be passed on to the correct area. Remember, hazards etc can't be fixed if no one knows about them.

7. Now Leigh Milne has the Bali Tri out of the way, he and Nicole will also be tying the knot (in Bali). Enjoy.

8. Watch this space for more info on 2011 Fernwood All Girls Tri.

9. I've joined those coughing and spluttering with the dreaded lurgy. It's that time of year.

10. Yay go the mature folk - Pro Tom Evans (CAN), at 42 has claimed the final podium position at Ironman Coeur d'Alene, but not before taking a ton of time to celebrate his race with his wife & kids before entering the finishing chute. His finish time was still 8:49:54.

11. And speaking of mature folk, Stu Fitch is currently on the run and in 2nd place in M55-59 of the same event. Appears Stu has snuck back through the field after being 6th off the bike (athlete tracker has been known to throw up some odd readings so keep that in mind). Go Stu.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you own at least ten swim suits, five pair of goggles, a dozen bathing caps, swim fins, a pullbuoy and at least a wet suit or speed suit if not both.
... you have a plan “A”, plan “B”’, and a “try not to die” race plan
... you can’t remember the last time you slept in past 6 am on a Saturday

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
