Robyn's E News 7 Sept 2011

Hi All,

It sounds as though many are looking forward to this weekend's race at Lake Alexander. The 300/13/2 format is ideal for club events ... fast & furious for some and challenging enough for others .... and we get finished & packed up early to still be able to enjoy a trip to the markets or brunch with the family !

It's also a fantastic distance for all our new members to have a go at. Great to see the increasing number of our juniors having a go at the senior events & this distance is ideal.

When can juniors compete at senior events? Basically as soon as they are skilled and confident enough to be riding on open roads and their age fits with the distance guidelines for juniors. If in doubt, have a chat to our RD John Thyne who also takes our junior training sessions.

RESULTS:

1. ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships, Zofingen, 10km run, 150km bike, 30km run

2. We have two members competing in Las Vegas, Blue Watt (M50-54) and Grant Preddy (M25-29). Good luck to both guys.

3. Getting great feedback on our new club T shirts. They look fantastic & answer the call for a distinctive club shirt to wear casually or for training and also to take away when racing. A number of our prizewinners received these at our Presentation Night so we will give them another week to feel special before offerring our remaining stocks for general sale. The shirts will be sold to members at cost ($60) with the club subsidising design and freight costs.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you regularly scan race calendars for triathlons in holiday destinations
... you looked out the window this morning and checked the BOM before riding (a small spot of blue hanging over Lee Point/Nightcliff)
... you live your year by events ... and it's flying by ... it's almost Noosa !

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

Our Presentation Night Dinner was a sell out, food was delicious & the Trailer Boat Club setting was enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to Belinda Townend and Kate Richardson for their behind the scenes efforts to make our social event of the year so enjoyable. The girls also starred on the dance floor !

Thanks also to the following sponsors who contributed to our prize draws: CycleZone; Fernwood; Amart All Sports; NT Elite Cycles; Sportsco (Mitchell Centre) & Spokes NT.

We encourage you to support those businesses who support us.

The Open Water Triathlon yesterday was well attended by both competitors and supporters. Thanks to RD Ron Griep for his efforts to put this Father's Day event together for us. It's one many look forward to and obviously a number of Dad's got a special leave pass to attend. Ron was assisted by a fantastic band of volunteers and our thanks go to them as well as without this valued help, our event could not have gone ahead.

Special mention to Lisa Svara, who was paddling past and assisted with water safety, much appreciated Lisa !

OTHER NEWS:

1. Renae McGarvie did miss out on competing in the World Police & Fire Games Triathlon. It was scheduled for the day Hurricane Irene hit New York. Renae was so very disappointed but apparently all is not lost ... she survived a bike ride in NYC peak hour traffic and has entered into the 27th annual one and only duathlon in Central park. Also her training for the Games wasn't wasted as she managed to enter indoor rowing at last minute too in the mixed senior doubles and missed out on a bronze medal by only 1 sec!!

2. Swimming NT has announced the Leah Cullen Relay Challenge will be held this year at Casuarina Pool, 4pm, Saturday 8 October 2011. They are looking for entries in the "Club 10km" details:

Clubs/Organisations may nominate more than one team, however the total maximum number of teams competing is 16. Priority will be given to the first team nominated from each Club/Organisation, and a minimum of 3 lanes (ie. 6 teams) will be dedicated to the SNTI Club 10km event – subsequent teams will only be accepted if space permits. Acceptance of subsequent teams will be on a first‐come first‐served basis until the maximum of 16 teams is reached. Club/Organisations will be notified and entry fee will be refunded if a subsequent nominated team is not accepted into the event.

If you want to put a tri team together, entry details and further information see www.nt.swimming.org.au

3. Our adventure racing lovers might like to check out the Lake Argyle Adventure Race, Sun 2 October 2011. There is $1000 prizemoney for 1st M & F. Further details: www.karunjie.net.au.

4. Blue Watt & Grant Preddy head for Las Vegas this week for Ironman 70.3 World Championships and Stu Fitch is Kona bound to acclimatise for the big one .. Ironman World Championships ... good luck guys.

5. We hear Blue has been getting some training tips from the Brownlee brothers. He also got himself a Dag of the Year nomination on Friday night for his daggy, baggy budgie smugglers at the Teams Event.

6. James Geddes got two nominations ... one in the Broken Spoke Award for his face plant (also at the Teams Event) & one in the Dag of the Year, given that the said face plant happened while wearing fairy wings.

7. Who was it that drove off and left one of their race wheels yesterday? Missed running over it by only centimetres ! Wheel has been returned owner safely.

8. Many of you will remember our Most Improved Trophies ... they ran out of space last year and the club has purchased new trophies. The history hasn't been lost though as it is included on the new version.

9. A couple of our trophies have disappeared, if you know that someone has one, please encourage them to return it. We are particularly interested to find the whereabouts of the NT Aquathlon trophies and an NT Olympic Distance Trophy.

10. On trophies, if you are lucky enough to win one (or more) please care for it. If you are leaving town please return trophy prior to going away. Also if you really don't want a trophy cluttering up your space, we are more than happy to store it for you. Some people like to be photographed with it and then hand back, whatever suits.

11. Photos from our Presentation Night are up on the club's Facebook page. Not on FB? They will be on our Flickr page soon.

12. Rumour has it that it rained in a few spots on Saturday morning .. meaning that humidity is building up ... as if we hadn't noticed !

13. A few of our members got up close and personal with the little croc that was found in Parap Pool the other morning. Mmmm, think they were hoping the the elastic band around its jaws held.

14. Ironman 70.3 Canberra is now sold out. You can be still be waitlisted for a spot, organisers will email if a withdrawal occurs & you are next on the list.

15. Keep an eye out for Clare's unique bamboo bike. It was stolen yesterday afternoon.

16. Enough for today .... if you have been through this lengthy read at work your boss is probably considering your future !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... people start asking you when you are going to shave down
... you look forward to your long run
... you know the names of more Hawaii Ironman winners than Australian Prime Ministers

Safe Training,
Cheers,

Robyn's E News 31 August 2011

Hi All,

31 August and it looks like our dry season is ending bang on schedule. Record cold is the word, and those of us who have swum during the dry can verify that ... there were definitely some nippy mornings. These past few days have seen a few air cons kick into life again, and it's back to sweating our way through training.

Ticket sales for our Presentation Nite Dinner on Friday have now closed. Judging by numbers it's going to be another fantastic night. The theme of Roaring 20s & Gangster is encouraged.

OTHER NEWS:

1. See attached for recent media mentions.

2. There were a large number of Dag of the Year nominations for 2010/2011 ... will you get a mention at our dinner on Friday?

3. On Dag of the Year ... already people are doing daggy deeds in 2011/2012. Don't forget to note them down and email to darwintriclub89@bigpond.com where they will be held on file to be dragged out and dusted off this time next year ! Never fear, the names of the daggy deed dobbers are suppressed.

4. Chad Anderson heads interstate this weekend to pursue his pro triathlon career. We wish Chad all the best with his endeavours. He has been active in promoting our sport & mentoring juniors and his contribution is appreciated.

5. Renae McGarvie was heading to New York for the World Police & Fire Games to take part in the triathlon. Obviously there have been huge disruptions due to Hurricane Irene and indications from the event website are that triathlon was one of the sports cancelled. How disappointing if that's the case.

6. Not yet renewed your membership ... go to www.triathlonnt.com.au

7. There have been a number of queries about when your magazine subscription starts if you pay as part of your membership. It can appear to take some time as it depends on date paid to distribution dates. It will happen though.

8. As well as my trusty point and click, we also had David Hancock snapping great shots at Fernwood All Girls Tri. David's photos (including finish line images) can be viewed at http://gallerytwosix.com/component/content/article/39-four-boxes/51-new-images-galleries.html . Thanks to David for providing participants with these momentos of their achievement.
