Robyn's E News 15 February 2012

Hi All,

Appears that many of you have washed the mud from your mountain bikes and splashed a bit of oil those chains, in preparation for our event on Saturday.

It’s a “looked forward to” event on our calendar which is thoroughly enjoyed. If you don’t have a mountain bike, you can always consider doing a team with your friends.

See you all down at Lake Alex on Saturday afternoon.

COMING UP - LYCRA AND LANE FEVER – OUR PLANNING DAY

Important Message from Club President Phill Hatty:

You will have seen a notice in earlier editions of E news advertising our upcoming Club Planning Day (Sunday 26 Feb 2012). This is a day that your committee has put together so that we can reflect and think about the club, its successes and its future direction. We have a very good club, but we need to understand why it is good and how we can continue the DTC to be a premier triathlon club in the future.

To do this well, we need a good cross-section of views and ideas and I therefore urge you to consider giving your club a few hours of your time to attend this planning day. This is for all ages and levels of experience – so don’t think you’re too young and don’t think you’re too new.

Graeme Parsons, who also happens to be our club secretary, is an experienced facilitator and has donated his time to facilitate the day. He has prepared an info sheet (attached) on what to expect and to answer questions you might have.

If you are interested, or want to find out more, please contact myself or Graeme.

We need to know numbers to finalise the venue and lunch on the day. Please email here if you are coming, or if you have any questions.

Regards,
Phill Hatty, DTC President

JUNIOR NEWS:

Our Junior Coordinator Jason Jones reports a great turn out of junior triathletes yesterday in hot and trying conditions. They undertook a

solid group warm up and then the sub juniors started the event with juniors and seniors giving loud encouragement.

The “subbies” always give a spirited effort and somehow manage to find a sprint in the legs when the finish line and family are in sight. The “junior” and “senior” group went off together with the seniors given extra laps.

Jason says it was a top effort by all competitors in their first race after the Xmas break and with the race director setting the longest course to date.

He would like to extend a big thank you to all parents and club members who come along and provide support and volunteer at each race.

Next on the Junior Calendar is a mountain bike triathlon at Lake Alexander on Sunday 26 February 2012.

All parents are asked to check suitability of helmets before the next race! Helmets need to meet national safety standards and must be securely fastened.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. Items for next E News by 8pm tomorrow please.

OTHER NEWS:

1. If you are (or know someone who is) new to triathlon or would just like to learn more about our sport, please see the attached notice regarding some beginner sessions to be run over the next couple of weeks. Please feel free to pass this on to any of your friends or work colleagues who have expressed an interest in taking up our sport.

2. Darwin athletes cleaned up during the lucky draw after the Geelong award presentations. I hear that a couple of wetsuits, a gift voucher and a group set were among prizes won by our members. That’s amazing ~ I’ve been at lucky draws where there have been 100 people and 98 prizes and I still miss out !

3. Work is progressing well on the new bike path out near the Leanyer Water Park. They were laying the foundations over the weekend.

4. Did anyone else see the bloke driving in a 4WD on the bike path out near Howard Springs on Saturday? He was following his little kids who were on scooters. Now that’s plain lazy! Reminds me of those people who let their dogs out of the car for a run and drive alongside them.

5. Hope to get our Facebook LIKES up to 200 real soon. Have you LIKED us yet?

6. Photos from Race 2 Aquathlon Series are now up on Flickr.

7. How exciting for our sport … Lance Armstrong back to his tri roots and 2nd at IM 70.3 Panama this morning in 3.50.55 !

8. Macca went well in Geelong yesterday & toppled some of the more favoured Aussies seeking Olympic selection. That’s with another 15 sec penalty.

9. The things you see while out riding! Stu and Ali Fitch were cycling home one evening last week and saw a 1.8m croc on the bike path out near the Police Centre. It took three big burly blokes to capture said croc and tape up the bitey bit so it could be removed.

10. Lara Whitehouse will be heading off to Perth this week and will be swimming the 5km at the weekend after qualifying again for
Australian Nationals in 14 year old girls. It is a gruelling event and she is swimming against the best in the nation. We wish Lara good luck.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you fit bike, two spare wheels, running gear & swim gear in a bike box
… you delay turning on the aircon for as long as possible
… you have been out & about off road, sharpening up your mtb skills

Safe training,

Cheers,

Robyn
