Robyn's E News 5 March 2012

Hi All,

Another record crowd turned out for the start of our Sprint Series yesterday.

Volunteer Race Director Barry Sullivan has been overseeing this event for a number of years now and as always produced a fantastic course. Barry jokingly said during his race brief that he hadn’t managed to arrange for any mud puddles on the run this year but had added a pothole near transition instead !

Barry was ably assisted by some wonderful volunteers and we thank them sincerely for their contribution of time and effort to help out at our event.

Numbers at the Palmerston event continue to grow and yesterday was no exception. In 2010 we had 47 in the sprint and 17 taking on the short option. Last year 57 were up for the sprint and 21 opted for short. This year we had 73 eager competitors lining up in the sprint and 18 tackled the short option and it was great to note there were a number of PB’s recorded !

OTHER NEWS:

1. Sign of things to come? As well as the ITU Pan Am at Clermount, the day also featured draft-legal age group events, a non-drafting age group race and youth F1 events. The men's draft-legal race sold out at 75 competitors.

2. We triathletes hear of a variety of ways people manage to be injured. Here’s one with a difference: Thankfully one of our members is all but recovered from the effects of having had a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, (good quality heavy strong glass !) thrown at her leg when she confronted 4 indigenous youths during an unlawful entry at her home at 2 am recently.

3. Did you see the bike bling in transition yesterday?

4. Must have tri item …. Brightly coloured running shoes ! If anyone can tell me which colour increases your speed the best I’ll grab a pair of those 

5. Are you an Excel formatting wizard? Would love to hear from you with a view to building a backup results spreadsheet. Please email here.

6. We have welcomed a number of new members over recent weeks and their enthusiasm for our sport is infectious. They have been sent a copy of the basic rules of triathlon but may still need some extra help on race morning until they get the hang of things. We are a welcoming and helpful lot, so if you are new (or even not so new) and want to know something please don’t be shy, ask away !

7. In the middle of race frenzy yesterday those of us on the sidelines saw some funny things including one competitor was unaware he had his Jetstream straw stuck in his helmet as he headed for the mount line.

8. As we welcome new members we have also farewelled another. Kathy McKay is heading for the East Coast and was given a send off over the weekend. We will miss Kathy and her smile at our events. Kathy has been another great volunteer at the club and we hope we she will come back for a visit and compete with us again sometime soon. All the best Kathy!

9. Going to try and remember to colour highlight those current member results from interstate and overseas. “Other” listed results signify a former member or NT connection and are listed for your interest as many like to hear how they are doing.

10. We occasionally order a couple of extra items of our fabulous club gear to make up the minimum numbers. Unfortunately it can mean that we get stuck with a few things which is why we don’t make a habit of it. We have reduced to clear some older stock and also have a couple of items left from our current order. Refer for sale/wanted. To check sizes please see size chart here.

BASIC RULES TO REMEMBER:

Your helmet must be done up BEFORE you remove your bike from the rack and kept done up until you replace your bike on the rack. You will be stopped if you do not obey this rule. Do not wear earphones or headsets.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you were happy not to be in Taupo this weekend
… you felt the frustration of those in NZ but understood the need for organisers to put competitor safety ahead of all else
… you thought a 70.3, a day later, was a good compromise for all concerned

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

This weekend our triathletes come out to play!!

We have ticked off our wet season events of splash n dashes and the mtb triathlon. Thinking back to this time last year, many of us were involved in our post-Carlos clean ups and training was something to fit in around torrential rain and severe weather. In contrast this year, we haven’t “lost” much training time to the weather gods, but looking back does remind us why we don’t kick off our triathlons until now.
Sunday is the start of our annual Sprint Series of events and the buzz is a collective “bring it on”!

As this event is at the Palmerston Aquatic Centre, don’t forget to set the alarm a little earlier than usual if you live in Darwin to factor in the extra driving/riding time. Good idea to double check that you have all your gear as well, it’s a long way to go back for a forgotten helmet or shoes. Our Palmerston & rural area members get to have the sleep in for a change this weekend.

The WOW ride will head up McMillans Road on the Bike Path, across Vanderlin Drive and down McMillans extension to where it hits the Stuart Highway. Turn around at this point and head back to the Velodrome. … you have been known to drink a recovery drink on the loo or in the shower
… you have more water bottles than glasses in your cupboard
… you go to see a movie and fall asleep

Hi All,

A large group of members from diverse backgrounds gave up their Sunday to participate in our Club Planning Day yesterday.

A big thank you to all those who attended and in particular to Graeme Parsons and Helen Clarke who donated their time to act as facilitators. They kept proceedings to a strict time schedule and had participants out of the “swim” and on the “bike” in a timely fashion. After a nutrition break (lunch organised by Bin Birk), they skilfully guided the group through to the home ‘run’ and across the finish line (early)!

The input from the Planning Day is now being worked on with a view to present the recommendations at the next committee meeting. Rest assured we have a great club and a wonderful group of people with the energy and drive to ensure it remains that way.

We are very grateful to Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats for their contribution of butchers paper for use on the day.

JUNIOR REPORT:

Our junior coordinator Jason Jones reports on Sunday’s junior event:

A coolish morning greeted the eager participants at yesterday’s junior mountain bike challenge at Lake Alexander. The cool water conditions kept the crocodiles away whilst all 3 age groups were given a staggered start for the swim leg.

Sub juniors led the field giving juniors and the 4 seniors something to chase. The highlight was the handicapped teams event to finish which was closely contested and raced in great spirit.

All enjoyed the occasion including the parents who once again provided great support. Thank you.

Well done to all juniors!

Reminder next junior event is at Lake Alexander on the 18 March 2012 due to cancellation of skills session at Casuarina pool (swimming carnival)

UNIFORM ORDER UPDATE:

1. Uniform order has just been delivered. Once sorted, I’ll email those concerned regarding collection options.

OTHER NEWS:

1. British Olympic triathlon hopeful Alistair Brownlee has been dealt a setback in his preparations for London 2012 after suffering an Achilles injury. I’m sure this is music to the ears of many but we do hope he recovers fully in time for the Olympics – watching the Brownlee brothers in full flight is an awesome experience.

2. Many of you will know Barry Smart. He retired a couple of years ago and did some travelling but still answers the call to act as a technical official for us when need arises. We have had news that Barry suffered a small heart attack & spent a few days in hospital. Barry still maintains a strong interest in the club and we wish him a very speedy recovery.

3. If you see Lucy Thompson and Berky this week, please wish them good luck as they are heading over to compete in the Abu Dhabi Triathlon. Also competing will be Matt Redmond. Any body else going??

4. In line for another Broken Spoke Award nomination, Jac Crofton is feeling a lot better with the general soreness gone and the wounds healing. She just needs the collarbone to knit! Jac had her first session back on the ergo yesterday afternoon and is already looking to the future.

5. Matt King was on the podium at the MTB Nationals over the weekend. Matt took out the Expert category. Congratulations Matt. He (and a number of others with a mtb bent) now eyes the Alice Springs Enduro in May.

6. Did you know our Women’s Series trophy used to be based on very short distance options which introduced many women to the sport back then? A number of years ago, we found our female members were opting to do the Sprint distance (and so were ineligible for the Women’s Series award) and many of the guys only wanted to do the shorter option. The decision to conduct the Women’s & Sprint Series over the one distance and offer a short option open to all members, has proved successful and popular.

7. Amy Pallentine is the lastest to have a run in with that fish at the Waterfront. Amy was out of there in a flash and says if that’s nature she’s not having any of it !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you can pass on the plate of Tim Tams without hesitating
… you feel naked without a water bottle in your hand
… you groan when the alarm goes off but feel great when that session is done

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn
