Robyn's E News 28 March 2012

Hi All,

The tri club is buzzing with talk of Sunday’s event. Whether you are competing, helping out or supporting, it is sure to be a very enjoyable morning down at Lake Alexander.

A large organising committee of dedicated volunteers are working behind the scenes to ensure our event is even bigger and better this year. It’s a very busy time for all concerned with the event, so please remember to thank our volunteers on Sunday.

Korgan Hucent of Ray White Darwin, naming rights sponsor of our NT Sprint Championships for the past three years, is also an experienced triathlete and knows what it takes to make a great event. We thank him for his generous sponsorship & contribution to the growth of the event.

We believe in supporting those who support us, so if you need a real estate agent, call Ray White Darwin on 8982 2400 or have a chat to Korgan.

There are competitors from all states and territories participating & for many it will be their first visit to Darwin. I know you will give a warm Darwin Triathlon Club welcome to our many interstate visitors on Sunday or if you bump into them over the next few days.

It is expected to be the biggest mass participation cycling event in Darwin. The Gran Fondo is a hugely popular and celebrated tradition in the Italian cycling world. Gran Fondo, meaning “big endurance”, is a long-distance, timed cycling event that welcomes competitive, amateur and recreational cyclists of all abilities. I believe it’s Mandorah to Darwin direction this year.

9. After withdrawing from the ITU World Cup at Mooloolaba due to illness, Emma Snowsill is rapidly running out of chances to make the Olympic Team this year. We wish Emma Snowsill a rapid recovery and hope to see her on the start line in Sydney.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you find yourself riding & running in the dark just to fit it all in
… a recovery day off gives you the jitters because you have extra time to fill
… you watched the IM Melbourne coverage and said “I’m going to do an Ironman one day”.

OTHER NEWS:

1. The Red Cross Migration Support team is currently supporting a growing number of asylum seeker clients who have been released from detention on Bridging Visa E. This visa provides work permissions, but currently does not have eligibility for Centrelink, Medicare, or an NT Driver’s License.

In order to assist these clients to be able to transport themselves to work in an affordable way, they would really like to be able to provide bicycles to those who need/would like them! This would also provide recreational and physical/mental wellbeing benefits through increased physical activity and greater independence. Public transport without a concession card is extremely costly.

So, they are wondering… does anyone have used bicycles lying around that they would like to donate? They will happily come and pick them up from wherever they may be, or you can drop them at Larrakeyah office. If you can help, please contact Natasha by email

2. Vincent Gilly participated at Mooloolaba Triathlon yesterday and sends greetings to all his Darwin friends.

3. As well as finishing his first Ironman yesterday Jason Jones completed his first marathon as well ....... he says next time he won't do 180k warm up on the bike!

4. It was an exciting finish to the ITU World Cup race in Mooloolaba on Saturday with three of the guys involved in a sprint finish for the win.

5. The Australian Sports Commission women in sport grants are now open. Closing date 27 April. Further information here

6. Dragon flies have been sighted !

ANOTHER TRI RULE EXPLAINED:

Q: No outside assistance is permitted at our triathlon events. What is outside assistance?
A: Any attempt by an unauthorised or unofficial source to help or to stabilise a competitor. Translation: you need to do it all by yourself. Outside assistance provides an advantage for one competitor over others so is not permitted. Examples: A parent/partner/friend can’t take your goggles & cap at the end of the swim or help you change a flat tyre on the bike leg or have a water bottle on the run course for you.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… no one believes you when you say “never again”

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

3. Dave McLeod and Brian Hannon knew before the Singapore start that they were pulling the pin at the end of the bike leg. They then did a great job of cheering home the rest of the crew.
