Robyn's E News 17 April 2013

Hi All,

This is a quick mid week E News mainly to convey a few extra details for the weekend.

As it is expected to be the usual warm conditions at Lake Bennett, please ensure you have at least 2 (two) full water bottles on your bike for the bike leg (and don’t forget to drink).

To assist athletes, we will be setting up a special needs table for the run.  Athletes are welcome to place their own fluid bottles/gels on this table prior to race start.  Please ensure they are clearly marked with your name.  You will be responsible for finding your own bottles/gels on the table during the run.

The usual water stations (start/finish area and near turnaround on the run) will be in place.

Please note:  No outside assistance is allowed (ie your supporters are not allowed to hand you water bottles etc on either the bike or run course).

With the assistance of Triathlon NT technical delegate Adele Butler, our “10 important race rules” sheet has been revised.  Please check the attached copy as there have been a few changes.

We look forward to seeing you all at Lake Bennett at the weekend. Don’t forget to allow extra travel time and to check that you have all your gear before leaving – it’s too far to drive back if you have forgotten your cycle shoes etc (don’t laugh, it’s happened more than once)!

OTHER NEWS:

1.  Following publication of the athlete information booklet for Ironman Australia it is worth noting the following entry regarding the Swim Rules for wetsuits:

“Wetsuits will be tight to the athletes body.  Where any part of the wetsuit can separate from the athlete’s body in any phase of the stroke it is considered as an artificial propulsion device and is banned eg.  Speedo Tri Elite full sleeved wetsuit and Rocket Science Carbon wetsuit with carbon drive.”

“Wetsuits will be no thicker than 5mm.  De Soto Water Rover is banned”.

2.  And this clarification regarding swim suits, trisuits and speed suits:

“…the garment must be 100% textile (eg lycra, nylon) and not have any rubberised material eg polyurethane or neoprene”.

3.  The above are not new rules, but it is the first time that the banned brands have been noted. Moral of the story:  always check that wetsuits are triathlon legal before purchasing.

4.  We hear from a number of sources that the road at Lake Bennett is in good condition.  Great news for Saturday afternoon!

5.  Also hearing that those upside down jellyfish are making themselves felt in Lake Alex.  Pesky critters more nuisance than anything else.  Ice is best remedy if you do happen to get a sting.

6.  Young Nicholas Tremblay was also among those juniors who attended the recent Triathlon NT Junior Development Camp.  Sorry we inadvertently missed listing him last E News.

E NEWS DISTRIBUTION LIST:

…. is being revised and will be in use from Monday. This usually throws up the odd hiccup, so apologies in advance.

Robyn's E News 15 April 2013

Hi All,

It will be a busy behind the scenes week for volunteers in the lead up to our Kerran Mudgway Memorial Club Championships at Lake Bennett on Saturday afternoon.

If you haven’t done this event before, we hope you are ready for a real Territory triathlon experience.  Lake Bennett is a must do race on our calendar and the location and late afternoon start time ensures we will have a very different swim, bike, run experience to that of our usual events.

It’s our big club event of the year and will be great to see you all there.  With the Championship distance and a short option on offer there is something for everyone.  Teams are welcome over both distances.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  We need some extra volunteers for this event including 1.  Someone for bike turnaround – do this with a friend and it can be quite social – turn up the radio and give some encouragement to all the athletes as they pass;   2.  People for far drink station and 3. OTHER NEWS:

1.  DTC juniors Bella & Jack Hatty, Bryn Pickering, Noah Marcroft, Hamish Wiltshire, Joseph White, Carter Brearley and Robert Pedersen-McLaren all participated in the Triathlon NT Junior Development Camp last week.  They were joined by a contingent from Alice Springs and had three days of instruction from Triathlon NT Junior Athlete Development head Tim Ellison.

2.  We had lots of positive feedback following Ray White Darwin NT Sprint Distance Triathlon including this message from Tony:

“I thought my mate Steve was mad by dragging me all the way to Darwin for a race especially 2 weeks after I had just done Melb IM, but seriously glad he did.

Your club epitomizes why I took the sport up years ago, a brilliant group of friendly people, selflessly missing a race to organize, marshal etc as well. My goody bag was better than Melb that cost me 850 bucks and all it had was a 2010 cycling mag in it. Wish I lived closer as I’d have my wife and kids doing little races every weekend with your club.”

3.  Those heading for Ironman Australia & IM 70.3 Busselton put in some solid training sessions again over the weekend.  Not long to go now for them.

4.  We all know how crazy busy we get during the dry season so I would encourage you all to add our key triathlon dates to your diary or calendar on the fridge.  We have the club champs this weekend at Lake Bennett, the NT Olympic Distance on Saturday 11 May 2013, the club Presentation Night Dinner on Saturday 10 August 2013 and then it’s straight into Finlay’s NT Long Course Triathlon on 25 August 2013.

5.  No names, but I hear a certain tri couple have no fewer than 80 water bottles between them, most never used.

6.  The stork was very busy this past week and it delivered a pair of second sons.  Congratulations to Ben & Melissa Sanders who welcomed Curtis on Wednesday.  Stork then backed up with a visit to Mike & Adrienne Varga with baby James.  All well.

Cheers,
Robyn
